Extending Mission-Critical Radio Coverage Across 56 School Buildings

Project Overview

Sarasota County Schools oversees 56 schools and more than 45,000 students across a wide geographic area, making reliable communication a critical component of its safety strategy. With multiple buildings, varying construction materials, and multi-story layouts, maintaining strong radio signals inside every school was a growing challenge for School Resource Officers (SROs), law enforcement, and emergency responders.

According to the case study, ensuring the safety of staff and students is a top priority for SCS, and poor indoor radio communication had the potential to delay emergency response or reduce its effectiveness

Motorola Solutions Approach

SCS partnered with Motorola Solutions to deploy custom-designed Public Safety DAS solutions across 26 schools — covering elementary, middle, and high school campuses.

The DAS Solutions Group designed each system using floor plans and onsite surveys to ensure accurate coverage, component selection, and antenna placement specific to each building’s structure

Engineering Approach Included:

• Detailed onsite RF surveys and propagation analysis
• Floor-plan-specific DAS system design for each campus
• Use of industry-leading DAS components
• Careful donor antenna planning and frequency coordination
• Stringent testing to ensure no interference with outdoor macro P25 systems

Motorola Solutions ensured that every system was code-compliant and met performance standards required by local authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs).

Deployment Details

• Systems installed included both coaxial DAS and fiber-fed DAS depending on building size
• Bi-Directional Amplifiers (BDAs) were used to boost public safety radio signals without interfering with the county’s P25 macro system.
• All installations were completed using industry-leading components and strict adherence to best practices in safety, reliability, and interference mitigation.

This ensured clear, uninterrupted radio coverage across all school buildings — from classrooms and hallways to stairwells and basements.

Results & Impact

The deployment dramatically improved communication reliability for School Resource Officers, law enforcement, and district safety teams.
